How do medical alert devices work?

A medical alert device works by featuring a distinctive panic button. When you press the button, it will trigger a call to either a monitored alarm centre or your nominated contacts so you can the get the help you need. You can typically wear the device around your neck as a pendant or on a belt clip.

Medical Alarms are not all the same. Some have different features to others. Before you buy an alarm, we recommend you choose one with the features that suit your lifestyle.

1) Fall detection - it should be free!

Most of the major providers of medical alerts offer devices that automatically detect a fall, which will then trigger an alert. This is incredibly beneficial as the device wearer may be unconscious or otherwise unable to push the panic button in a serious emergency.

At SureSafe we believe this is a core function and we offer it at no extra cost. All other major device providers in the US provide fall detection as an optional extra and charge $5 - $10 a month for the service on top of their advertised monthly subscription. This is particularly frustrating as most devices have the functionality already built in, but switched off by default.

2) Monitoring options - what happens when an alert is raised?

All medical alert providers will typically connect you to a monitoring centre, which is staffed 24/7 by trained professionals to assist the alarm user in an emergency. The monthly subscription, sometimes paid quarterly or annually, contributes to the cost of the monitoring centre as well as the cellular service costs, which enables the device to make the call for help.

SureSafe is the only major provider in the US that offers this form of monitoring AND a family and friends monitoring service. Our customers can choose to connect their alarm to up to 5 emergency contacts of their choosing instead of a call centre. In fact the majority of our customers choose this option. We find many elderly alarm wearers and particularly those with dementia prefer being able to speak to family or friends in an emergency rather than someone they don't know. This also brings down the monthly subscription cost.
